The Public-Private Alliance Foundation (PPAF) is building evidence on innovations for clean cooking in Haiti. Most families endure a poverty-respiratory disease-deforestation trap of dependence on charcoal for cooking. PPAF & collaborators are conducting R&D about solar cookstoves & biodigesters for biogas & garden fertilizer. This aims to promote sustainable development, empower women & girls & combat climate change.
Most Haitian families burn charcoal to cook their daily meals. This has tremendous negative effects on environment and health. Hillsides are denuded of firewood and soil slides into the sea. Households, especially women and children, are afflicted by respiratory diseases. A large part of family income is spent on this cooking fuel. Known alternatives are expensive or unavailable.
Simply put, PPAF & colleagues bring sunshine & garbage into the fight. PPAF leads a Haitian & USA-based group to focus on solar cookers & biodigesters for cooking & garden fertilizer. We created Haiti's 1st university course on this, now in its 3rd year; we support classes at a youth foundation & a community center; we monitor results; & we convene seminars at the UN & elsewhere. The project addresses climate concerns, engages local groups, documents innovations & promotes additional efforts.
The project establishes leverage & potential for broader adoption. The classes are eye-openers for students & community members, who see immediately verifiable results. This stimulates desire to own & use solar cookers & biodigesters, & promote them locally. Our group is building impact in & around 3 Haitian cities. The work draws from & contributes to Solar Cookers International, Solar CITIES Global Biogas Education, KDCK, the Clean Cooking Alliance & the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
