Your donations to buy --in El Geneina, Darfur-- blankets, food, clothes, shoes, sleeping mats and tarpaulins, and also provide cash assistance for people displaced by recent attacks on the city of El Geneina and Kereneik town. Our board in the US and our team in Darfur are from the area, so we are better able to communicate directly with people there. From June 2020 through June 2022, we have already distributed such aid to 1,327 displaced families and another 1,234 displaced individuals.
Since December 2019, the greater El Geneina and Kereneik areas of West Darfur State suffered massive violence. As of July / August 2022, 83,049 people remain displaced in El Geneina, and another 24,586 displaced in Kereneik, (International Organization for Migration's Displacement Tracking Matrix). West Darfur State is one of the most food insecure parts of Sudan, with parts of the area of concern reaching crisis and emergency levels of food shortages in the third quarter, 2022 (FEWSNet).
Your donations will be administered by our board in the US and our team in El Geneina, and will be used to buy aid such as, food, tarpaulins, mats, blankets and shoes from El Geneina businesses. So your money will both help the displaced and the local economy. And since our board, membership and on-site team are from the area, our constant contact with the displaced is more efficient and helps us provide them with what they most want, even in catastrophic times like these.
Blankets, tarpaulins, food, shoes, clothes, cash and other such aid relieves displaced people of some basic needs. With that relief comes more ability to plan and act. We buy these and similar items in El Geneina, West Darfur State, Sudan, so your money helps the local economy (and cuts down on shipping costs).
