Summary

With the economic impact of covid 19 in Fiji bringing job losses and depression there has been an increase in violence against women and children. The youth, trained with the virtues project and puppets, continue to make a huge impact visiting communities and teaching government officials about how the virtues project operates to change the way people respond to their messages and each other. In recognition the Red cross and other agencies request their voluntary support for their programs.

Challenge

The people of Fiji need to learn the skills available in The Virtues Project to address the issue of violence against women and children. Virtues Project Fiji has trained puppeteers to reach children and teach then to deal with bullying. This project increases that activity and will add the support of trained women and men as PEACEMAKERS to reach out to the communities to give them the 'tools' they need to deal with these problems. Funds for travel, training and communications are required.

Solution

The 5 strategies of The Virtues Project - speak the language of the virtues with 100 defined qualities, recognize teachable moments, set clear boundaries, honor the spirit and counseling - are the tools people need to address these problems. 20 PEACEMAKERS will be people using these tools in their own lives and can teach others in 8 communities (2,000 people) how to use them. Counseling will be particularly important at the beginning as people seek ways to heal from their trauma.

Long-Term Impact

The project will work with 100 people out of whom 20 or more will become PEACEMAKERS. As they make changes in the communities it will be visible to the authorities seeking solutions to the current situation. The project will continue to train PEACEMAKERS as the impact of their work becomes clear.
