The Alagados favela is a peripheral neighborhood of one of the poorest Brazilian main cities, Salvador (Bahia), where 50.000 people live within unstructured households. In this context infested by trafficking (drugs, prostitution...), the poorest children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable. We offer an adapted, secure and free school support, a program called 'Being a Child in the Alagados' for 90 children and teenagers between 6 and 15 years old, who also receive 2 meals a day.
Drug trafficking is the main disease of the Alagados favela. The vast majority of the young inhabitants grow up without their father or their mother and often within unstructured households. The family income being generally insufficient to cover the basic needs, many suffer from deficiencies in food and receive little medical care. They spend a lot of unsupervised time each day in the street, exposed to dangers (violence, drugs, traffic...), or on screens without supervision.
In this context, 'Ser Crianca em Alagados' is the Joao de Deus Association program that provides access to a human and integral quality education for 90 children and teenagers (6-15 years old), and their families. Its a free program, offering 2 meals a day, home visits and personalized assistance, priority for the most needy people, tutoring of children in Portuguese and mathematics, human and citizen training (new theme every month), sports times, cultural and leisure tours...
- Offer a better future (high-level education, job...) for almost 100 children and teenagers, by encouraging these young people to discover and develop their talents, and by creating bridges with quality professional training.
