At the Vermilion Sea Institute (VSI), we believe that children hold the future of our planet in their hands. Nowhere could this be more important than in a critical but threatened bioreserve that is home to numerous endangered species. Aventureros, a program co-designed by educators and the local youth of Bahia de los Angeles, Mexico, gives participants the unique opportunity to explore the shores they call home, and grow into environmental changemakers for their community.
The Bahia de los Angeles Bioreserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to whale sharks, sea turtles, and other endangered species, is under constant threat of pollution, overfishing, and a lack of environmental education. Although these waters provide important biological, cultural, and economic value, the local community has yet to develop widespread systems and interest to prioritize the protection of the ecosystem.
Aventureros provides science-based education and curated access to the bioreserve to 50 area youth throughout the year. Through a collaborative and inclusively-designed curriculum, participants learn more about their environment, experience the area's biodiversity up close, and train to be conservation leaders in their community. Aventureros directly contributes to ongoing conservation work to clean up local beaches, monitor and report on plastic pollution, and protect marine species.
Participants will become a generation of eco-warriors for the Baja Peninsula, educating their community and fighting to protect their vital, beautiful, and biodiverse land and waters. Please donate today to support and strengthen these young and brilliant conservation leaders!
