Challenge

The recent wave of violence combined with the economic poverty and the social belief in mexican families that think kids should work at a young age in some areas of Monterrey, has a result that a big number of young people dropped out of school to find a job. This causes a very high school desertion rate in the state. These people often never return to study and in the worst cases they get involved in illegal activities. Caritas de Monterrey gives them tools to stay in school and in a good path.

Solution

We give young boys and girls of third year of secondary education an economic grant so they can buy food, transportation to go to school and school supplies. We also offer them psychological attention, courses of values and human development, workshops in different trades and cultural classes so they don't have the necessity to dropout school, and have the means to live a better life. By having all this, they also have an improvement in their school grades and increases their self-esteem.

Long-Term Impact

We support 286 young girls and boys to stay in school every scholar year. This helps them to stay studying, finish their basic education and have the vision to enter college or study a technical career. In the long term, this also helps their families and community where they live to have a better quality of life.
