Summary

This project is transforming two under-resourced government schools in Karachi into model institutions of learning. Our interventions involve upgrades in infrastructure, governance, administration, teacher professional development, academic innovation & tracking and a rich menu of extra-curricular activities. Based on the successes here we advocate for education reform through policy change and legislation, impacting 3200 girls directly & thousands more in public schools all over.

Challenge

Most government schools lack basic facilities, trained teaching staff and governance systems, let alone opportunities for holistic development. For most Pakistani children, attending a government school is the only option, hence, they attend classes in unacceptable conditions. The quality of education in such schools is not up to the mark, with poor learning outcomes and a complete absence of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Solution

The project aims to transform two government schools in Karachi into model schools through interventions in infrastructure, governance, administration, teacher professional development, academics and co-curricular activities e.g. sports, art, chess, music etc. The project (i) provides quality holistic education to 3200 girls and (ii) presents the successes of these interventions to the government as recommendations to be adopted in schools across the nation through policy change and legislation.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide high-quality holistic education to 3200 girls, bridging the gap between the opportunities available to graduates of low-cost/public schools and elite private schools. The reforms will equip the schools to continue providing quality education to the coming generations. Our advocacy for reforms at these schools will lead to the adoption of policies that improve what and how children are taught, teachers trained and evaluated at government schools across Pakistan.
