Summary

Reef Check Malaysia works to conserve Malaysia's ocean and marine ecosystems. Malaysia is part of the Coral Triangle, home to more than 75% of the world's coral species. Our Projects are based in 3 locations in Malaysia - Tioman Island, Mersing group of islands, and Mantanani Island. Our teams are based on these islands, where they work with the local communities to empower them to look after the marine resources.

Challenge

Coral reefs provide food source and employment for millions around the world, especially coastal communities. They act as an important carbon sink, which helps in our fight against climate change. Despite being ecologically and economically important, coral reefs are under increasing threats from human pressures such as overfishing, marine litter, sewage pollution, unsustainable tourist numbers, and coastal development. They also face natural threats from climate change and global warming.

Solution

We will track and monitor the health of coral reefs at over 220 sites around Malaysia. Equipped with reliable data, we will develop reef management and conservation plans according to site specific needs. Recently damaged coral reef sites can be rehabilitated. Coral reefs that are affected by pollution can be addressed by promoting environment-friendly tourism practices. We will also advocate for policy changes to reduce human impacts in marine park areas.

Long-Term Impact

In the long-term, we aim to have sustainably managed and resilient coral reefs in Malaysia, as well as local island communities that are socially resilient. We want to address the threats to coral reefs and the marine ecosystem before irreversible damages occur, while reducing community dependence on coral reef and reef-related activities for survival. Please support our marine conservation efforts in 2020 by donating to Reef Check Malaysia! Let's save our Nature and Environment!
