Summary

Imagine living without connectivity and Internet access. We believe that technology should serve all of us equally. That is why we are working on: 1. A SOLELab for an indigenous Wayuu community in Colombia: A public space where they can use the Internet to get access to education, digital literacy and create new opportunities, such as economic growth for their community. 2. An open source "solutions guide" for Internet connectivity, so that people can learn alternatives to be connected.

Challenge

People, especially the children, in Boca de Camarones, do not have a decent place to be able to connect to the internet in their community: internet signal is precarious, the public access point is fenced and closed. They can only connect in surroundings, from a cellphone, sitting in the dusty street or on top of a stone, no shadow... How to do homework? How to watch a movie or documentary all together? How to create a website for their tourism venture?

Solution

The SOLE Lab: a futuristic public space based on self-managed learning supported by technology (SOLE). Environmentally sustainable architecture and furnishing, it will be a happy, participatory and quickly-assembled environment where groups can learn, engage in dialogue across differences and collaborate, supported by the Internet, creating flourishing communities and a more equal and connected world. A open-source "solution-guide" to self-assess current challenges and seek enhanced Internet.

Long-Term Impact

Elainer Ipuana was trained as a SOLE Ambassador in 2014. With enthusiasm, energy and his great people skills has managed to get his Wayuu Indigenous community, to use the Internet in group, promoting learning, dialogue and the flourishing of the initiatives proposed: young people learning to program video games basing them on the investigation of their traditions and culture, managing to promote initiatives related to tourism and the natural conservation.
