Since 1990, more than 4300 girls living in poverty, orphaned, abandoned, from broken homes or unsafe environments, have come to Dhammajarinee Witthaya School (DWS) and received a secure home, quality education, food, clothing, medical and dental care. DWS is the only free boarding school for girls administered by Buddhist nuns in Thailand. DWS serves non-Buddhist students as well, with Buddhist activities being optional. Help us fund more at-risk girls who need and desire to come.
Many girls in remote areas of Thailand do not have access to schools or to free, quality education. Increasing social and economic pressures force children living in poverty to drop out of school at a young age to support their family. This is especially true for girls, who often end up working in fields or factories, becoming vulnerable to life-long struggle and exploitation.
The opportunity to complete 12 years of education has been shown to help end poverty, life long struggle, exploitation, and abuse. DWS currently has over 1100 pre-school to 12th grade students from all regions of Thailand. In the words of the school Director, Dr Aunampai Passakchai, "If the school did not help take care of these girls, their problems would be multiplied. I do not want to see these groups of children increase in the society. What we are doing is preventive problem solving."
The impact of educating girls will extend far beyond the individual to reach all regions of the nation. When you educate girls you educate families and communities, promote health, prosperity, and sustainability, and create hope for the future. 90-95% of the girls who have completed grade 12 have received scholarships to university to study their area of interest. Women with higher education make better life-long decisions, especially regarding health, family, and all quality-of-life factors.
